Business Development & Marketing Manager role at Travers Smith.

This position is within the firm’s Business Development, Clients, Marketing, Events and Communications team. The role involves developing and executing business development strategies and plans for the Pensions Practice Group and nominated initiatives, collaborating across Practice Groups and with senior stakeholders to drive growth and client engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Business and Client Planning – Develop and refine business plans with partners and the lawyer team; identify market and client growth opportunities; monitor and report ROI of plans and activities.
  • Create targeted BD and marketing activity plans aligned to the business plans; coordinate with Head of Client Relationships to implement client action plans for significant clients; align activities across practice groups for a cohesive "one firm" approach.
  • Develop understanding of key client relationships, practice areas, competitor and market trends; make recommendations to impact revenue and client growth and cross-sell where appropriate.
  • Business Development and Marketing Activities – Produce annual BD and marketing plans for the Pensions Practice Group and cross-firm initiatives, covering marketing materials, pitch documents, thought leadership, social media, website content, events and hospitality.
  • Provide market and practice insights to support Communications in media/PR planning; leverage PR to support business development objectives.
  • Plan and execute client-facing events with the Events team; assess sponsorship and hospitality opportunities for value.
  • Deliver targeted thought leadership to raise the practice group’s profile via direct communications, website content, email, LinkedIn and other channels.
  • Lead the pitch process for opportunities in the Pensions Practice Group and support firm-wide pitches with insights.
  • Manage directory and awards submissions; maintain high-quality content and ensure alignment with firm processes.
  • Act as InterAction champion for practice groups and cross-firm initiatives; coordinate with Digital Marketing, PAs and lawyers to keep BD activities updated.
  • Manage BD budgets for groups and initiatives; participate in firm-wide client initiatives and marketing programs.
  • Other Responsibilities – Help develop the BD team’s expertise through meetings, sharing best practices, training and original research.
  • Assist in planning and managing annual BD budgets with the Chief Marketing Officer and legal Heads of Department.

Qualifications & Skills

  • 5+ years’ business development experience in professional services, ideally within a law firm.
  • Strong commercial acumen with proven success in driving business growth.
  • Advanced skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and InterAction.
  • Ability to leverage macro-economic trends for BD planning.
  • Excellent communicator and presenter; able to influence internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience in managing, mentoring and motivating teams; hands-on leadership style.
  • Confident advisor to senior stakeholders; comfortable with ambiguity and challenging the status quo.
  • Strategic and analytical thinker; skilled in setting and measuring BD program success.
  • Proactive in generating high-impact strategic ideas to support firm growth.
  • Effective relationship builder with clients and colleagues; highly organized and able to handle fast-paced workloads.
